Jocelynn Helmbrecht is a published writer, disability advocate, nonprofit leader, and mother of three boys. Her middle son, Wesley, had significant disabilities and passed away at the age of twenty-four in February 2026. Jocelynn has more than two decades of lived and professional experience navigating disability services and Medicaid HCBS. She is the founder of Our Right to Remain, where she works to make disability policy understandable, amplify the voices of people with disabilities and their families, and advocate for the right to live and receive services in the community.

Our Right to Remain was created to offer a space for parents, advocates, and caregivers of children and adult children with disabilities. Our goal is to provide current pertinent information regarding advocacy, legislation, and HCBS services.

Our Facebook page, Our Right to Remain, offers a place for parents to connect, share, ask questions, and offer advice.

Because Medicaid services are a mix of federal and state policy and every state renders services differently, unified advocacy is challenging, but not impossible. Our aim is to help parents connect and advocate within and beyond their state lines.

My sweet boy, Wesley, received services through Virginia until his untimely passing in February 2026. Though my son is gone, his voice is not. Once a mama bear, always a mama bear. And this one still roars.
