Letter to Attorney General Todd W. Blanche

Eighteen governors are asking the federal government to not retreat from its longstanding role in protecting the right of people with disabilities to live and receive services in their communities.

In a letter to Attorney General Todd W. Blanche, the governors responded to recent actions by the Department of Justice concerning Olmstead v. L.C. and federal enforcement of the right to community integration.

“As Governors, we are deeply concerned by the federal government’s retreat from its longstanding role in protecting the right to community integration and that such actions signal changes to programs serving individuals with disabilities. “

The letter calls on the federal government to continue protecting people with disabilities from unnecessary institutionalization and to uphold the promise of the ADA and Olmstead.

Perhaps equally profound is the reassurance it gives the people with disabilities and those who love them in those states that their governors are standing publicly behind their right to remain in their communities.
